it seems to me that people are wanting to be a part of a group more than ever these days.

we all work in these solitary offices, away from our peers, in a chain of command that disallows authentic discussion with other people. we so want out of these boxes we've put ourselves in but we set up a system that makes collaboration difficult.

that's one thing that always awed me about the internet when looking at its creation. open-source. the internet is a medium unlike any other in that it encourages collaboration without financial gain. W50 is this ultimate conference whereby leaders in their field are brought together with their peers to discuss the highs and lows of their work and to learn new strategies. the key to creating this safe and secure environment where people can talk freely: it's invite only. W50 invites CMO's from non-competitive industries. like the CMO of Best Buy and the CMO of Home Depot. they have similar challenges but sharing ideas doesn't compromise their business.

i think that this concept of freely sharing ideas is something we are all grasping at. the best way to facilitate this freedom remains to be seen. the structure of the internet is a promising start.

how gorgeous are these? coming from a girl with intense book love, not just the words but the physical objects. i have a list of my favorite things as dictated to my teacher when i was in kindergarten. tops for me were "really BIG books". as a tween, more than once i spread out my collections of sweet valley twins and babysitters club books over the floor of my room. lining them up spine to spine, they covered my entire floor and i sat on my bed to admire the shapes and colours. source: just a few prints

how cool. i found this amazing illustrator on etsy.com last spring, yellena, and purchase some of her work (see below). i just noticed that anthropologie.com has added this amazing and innovative new section to their site called ADORNED. it presents five new ways of interacting with their accessories and the fourth one, WONDERLAND, features yellena's illustrations (above). wow. this is something i would love to recreate for the magazine. it's simply stunning. anthro's aesthetic gives me butterflies in my stomach sometimes.

Tara Donavan takes common mass produced items and turns them into captivating sculptures. i am amazed at the power of scale and that this artist can see something acting so completely different than what it was designed for. i am inspired. i am reminded of the evening that my roomate and i transformed our Whistler staff apartment into a magical space with four white eyelet shower curtains (saved from the Hotel Chateau Whistler trash) by randomly attaching it with push pins inserted into the ceiling. it looked like a bubbling cloud growing above our heads. we sat back when we were finished so delighted with ourselves. our pad took on a surreal magical quality and became THE place to kick back :)

Kate Moss hologram from the 2006 Alexander McQueen show. i believe the music is from Schindler's List in the scene where the little girl with the red coat is running around amids the dead in piles at the side of the street. i got a few wee chills viewing this imagining how it must have felt to be there. i am a sucker for all that is theatrical and this takes the cake.

Carottes Rapées à l'Avocat

- One small ripe avocado, about 150 grams (5 1/3 ounces), diced
- The juice of a lemon or an orange
- A dash of balsamic vinegar or oxymel
- Fine sea salt, freshly ground pepper
- Tabasco sauce or similar (I use Bayou Red) or strong mustard, to taste
- 4 medium carrots, about 450 grams (1 pound) total, peeled and grated
- 250 grams (9 ounces) firm tofu or cooked chicken, diced
- Toasted seeds -- sunflower, sesame, flax, or a mix thereof

Serves 2.

Combine the avocado, lemon juice, and balsamic vinegar in a medium salad bowl, and mash the avocado roughly with a fork. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and Tabasco sauce. Fold in the carrots and tofu, and stir until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for half an hour or up to a day. Toss again before serving, adjust the seasoning, and sprinkle with liberal amounts of toasted seeds.
